What exactly is a Self Care Sunday?
In fact, Self Care Sunday is a new name for an old concept: consciously taking time for yourself. How much time that is is entirely up to you and your schedule. And yes, it doesn’t necessarily have to be on a Sunday. Maybe you take 10 minutes a day and try to build a daily habit in your everyday life. But it can also be a whole day that you take off just to be with yourself.
What exactly you do and how much time you take is not basically not that important. Because the basic idea of Me-Time is simply that you consciously use the time you have to switch off and do something good for yourself.
Why do I need Me-Time?
Fewer and fewer people are consciously taking a break from stressful everyday life. When you have a few free minutes, you often have to take care of the household or scroll through social media. Me-time is one of the easiest ways to reduce stress and listen to your body’s needs.
How do I best use me-time?
It’s entirely up to you. Do what is good for you. But to get some inspiration on what you could do on such a Self Care day, we finally come to our 12 ideas for a day only for you.
12 Inspirational Self Care Sunday Ideas
In our stressful everyday life, unfortunately, our sleeping time is often much too short. Although the amount of sleep we get is so vital for our body and our general well-being. That’s why you shouldn’t set an alarm clock on your personal self-care day. This way, your body can catch up on sleep that it missed out on during the week.
Extra tip: Try not to sleep too long anyway. With more than 10 hours of sleep, we sometimes feel weak and tired all day.
Get some fresh air
Fresh air and exercise are perfect for waking up or clearing your mind. So get your shoes on and off into nature. If you have a forest or park nearby – perfect. The tranquility of nature, the oxygen, and the soothing scent of flowers will immediately improve your mood.
But if you live in the middle of the city, like us, you can, of course, just take a walk in your neighborhood.
Breakfast is important
Unfortunately, there is often little time for a balanced breakfast before work. Provided that the morning meal is so important to wake up and provide your body with energy for the day, it’s such a pity that we often skip this meal.
On your day off, you should, therefore, take some time for an extensive breakfast. Of course, it’s best to have a healthy breakfast with whole grains and fruit. But if you are more in the mood for a chocolate croissant or a brunch with your best friend, go for it – it’s your day.
A little bit of relaxation
Relaxation exercises such as meditation or yoga are a great way to recharge your batteries for the day. They also help you focus entirely on yourself for a while. Hence, this is such an excellent exercise for your self-love day. Stretch a little and listen to your body because your body knows best what it needs.
If you are not a fan of meditation or yoga, conventional relaxation or stretching exercises or relaxation music can also be helpful.
On a day off like this, you certainly want to treat yourself to something delicious to eat. Then why not something good not only for your soul but also for your body? For example, treat yourself to a freshly mixed smoothie with apple and spinach. Or how about a delicious salad, including your favorite vegetables?
Anything that is healthy and gives you new energy is allowed. Instead of grabbing a sweet snack like chocolate in between – how about e.g., an apple instead? Or snack on some fresh berries – depending on what’s in season.
What activity can you really relax in? Turn your cell phone to silent so no one can interrupt and treat yourself to a hot bubble bath by candlelight. Put on a facial mask and watch your favorite series. Or maybe you’d prefer to spend the day at the spa, hairdresser, or manicure. Just pamper yourself a little and treat yourself to something that does well to your body and soul.
Read a book
When was the last time you took the time to read a book? It doesn’t matter whether you’re an avid reader or not, whether it’s an e-book, novel, short story or non-fiction book – I’m sure you’ll find something that interests you. Whether you are a fan of fiction books or prefer to read something that motivates you or even educates you is entirely up to you.
Extra tip: If you really don’t enjoy reading at all, an audiobook or an exciting podcast will, of course, do the trick as well.
Try something new
“When was the last time you did something for the first time?” When this question first popped up on my Pinterest screen, it got me thinking. The older we get, the more we seem to get lost in our habits and routines. That’s why it can be all the more exciting to try new things every now and then.
How about, for example, a cooking class for exotic dishes or a sport that you have never tried? You could also try to play an instrument or learn a new language. There are no limits to your imagination and creativity. And who knows, maybe you will find your new favorite hobby or discover a hidden talent.
As I said, it’s your day, and you should do what is right for you personally. Are you a person who likes to be around people, but your loved ones often fall short due to your busy life? Then consciously take some time for a meeting or a call with your best friend, your partner, or your family. However, if you want to have some time to yourself, there’s nothing wrong with simply turning your phone off for a while.
Extra tip: How about a social media detox? Consciously do without apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Co. and see how much time you suddenly have to enjoy your day.
Reorganize one place in your home
Have you ever noticed how an entire room can change if you move just one piece of furniture? By redesigning the room structure, your room can provide a completely different atmosphere after just a few simple steps.
One possibility is to turn to a small construction site in your apartment on your day off. For example, rearrange your wardrobe – everything that you haven’t worn for more than a year is going to be thrown out. From now on, you will likely feel relieved every time you open your closet and admire the new order.
The same goes for storage rooms, kitchen utensils, or your desk. A little order can give you a lot more motivation to use the reorganized places in your apartment. For example, a tidy desk can provide a lot more motivation to work from it.
Wear your favorite outfit
A study found that we exude a lot more self-confidence when we wear clothes that we feel comfortable in. For example, it can be a business outfit that makes us look more self-confident or our new favorite shirt in a color that makes us happy.
So let’s get into your favorite outfit and just be happy. If you spend the day at home, your favorite outfit can also be your cuddly outfit. The softer and fluffier the better – the main thing is that you are comfortable.
Spoil yourself with something delicious
On your self-love day, you can not only treat yourself to a little beauty treatment but also to something that you are craving for. How about a few tasty chocolates, a glass of wine, or a yummy cocktail? If you are currently on a diet, you can declare your me-time day to be your personal cheat day and just enjoy what you otherwise refrain from.
Extra tip: Introducing a cheat day can even help with diets to avoid food cravings. As long as you don’t overdo it, of course 😉
Your self-love Sunday is also a great way to clear your head. In a so-called brain dump, you try to get all the thoughts out. Because otherwise, they are floating around in your head and distracting you from your work.
And this is how it works: Put your phone aside, go to a quiet place, and arm yourself with a piece of paper and a pen. Take a few minutes to write out everything that concerns you. You don’t need to follow any rules or regulations. Just let it all out. It doesn’t matter how small the thought is -just write it down. Afterward, you can take some time to organize the ideas you have just written down. You can transfer everything important to a notebook.
You’ll see how much more relaxed your head feels once you’ve got everything out of your head that you don’t need right now. It’s also a great way to organize your thoughts and see what’s important to you at the moment.
A delicious dinner
Your Me-Day is slowly coming to an end, but of course, one thing is still missing: dinner. So let’s finish our day with a great yummy meal. Whether you prepare a healthy balanced dinner, go out to your favorite restaurant, or order something is entirely up to you.
Extra tip: Maybe you would like to try something completely new? – Whether it’s a new restaurant, a new recipe, a new way of preparing food, an ingredient you have never tried, or a specialty from a different culture.
